WHAT’S THE AVERAGE COST OF MOVING?
Average cost to move to canada, typical local moves under 100 kilometers cost $80-$100 for two movers and $120-165 for three movers per hour. Thus local movers are priced on the size of your home. ranging from $650 to $1,500 on average.
Whereas a long-distance move is substantially more expensive. For moves of more than 100 kilometers, the cost ranges from $2,000 to $5,000 on average, and there are other considerations such as weight, point of origin, and final destination.
Both local and long distance moves are normally furnished with a truck, moving blankets and all the essential moving equipment.
Asking your relocation consultant about what is included in your move is crucial. As well as your coverage options.

HOW ARE MOVES CALCULATED
There are a number of elements to consider when trying to get the cost of moving.
- Are you moving locally or long distance?
- Do you need storage during your relocation?
- Do you want to have packers or will you take care of your own packing?
OTHER FACTORS INCLUDED IN MOVING COSTS
Your Location: Do you live in an apartment or condo without an elevator or is your building not accessible necessitating additional walk time from the exit to the moving truck. Can the moving truck dock immediately at your home or does your transfer require a satellite vehicle to shuttle your items to a larger truck. There are additional fees if you’re moving to a location that can be reached by ferry.
Moving firms are busiest from May to August, so if your move-in and move-out dates are set in stone during this time, the cost may change. Plan beforehand because last-minute movements can cost more or less money.
Dropping Off Items: As labor is charged by the hour, if you opt to drop off some of your belongings somewhere other than the intended recipient, be prepared to pay more.
Moving Any special items: Need to transfer a piano, car(s), yachts, art? You should budget additional money to move those special objects.

When looking at the true cost of coming to Canada, there are two levels of costs to examine:
- The costs of the immigration application process are the first stage. This covers all charges related to getting the appropriate visa.
- The costs associated with the actual migration are the second stage.
If you were applying for immigration to Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker or Canadian Experience Class programs, your average first-stage expenditures for a family of four would be as follows:
Applicable Government / Third-Party Fee | Applicable Fees Due for a Family of Four |
---|---|
Government Application fees | ~ $3,360 |
Language testing | ~ $700 |
Having foreign degrees assessed | ~ $545 |
Criminal background check | ~ $50 |
Medical examinations | ~ $860 |
Passport transmission fees | ~ $80 |
Total Costs | ~ $5,595 |
If you are applying as a Federal Skilled Worker, or Federal Skilled Tradesperson (unless you’re currently permitted to work in Canada and have a valid job offer), you are also going to have to have the required amount of settlement funds available in addition to the aforementioned sum.
Family size determines the amount of the settlement, which must be liquid, accessible, and free of debt. Even if your dependents (spouse and dependent children) will not be with you, you need to prepare enough settlement monies for your family size including them. The necessary sums are as follows:
Number of family members | Required funds (in CAD) |
---|---|
1 (single applicant) | $13,310 |
2 | $16,570 |
3 | $20,371 |
4 | $24,733 |
5 | $28,052 |
6 | $31,638 |
7 | $35,224 |
For each additional family member, add | $3,586 |
Remember, your settlement monies are not a cost you have to pay for immigration. Instead, these are your own funds that you can spend to start your new life in Canada.
Let’s go into costs for stage two: the move. The average moving expenses for a family of four relocating to Canada from abroad are as follows:
Applicable Moving Expense | Cost |
---|---|
Moving household goods of a four bedroom home (20 – 40 foot container) | ~ $10,000 |
Medical insurance for a family of four for 90 days before going onto government medical | ~ $1,000 |
Airline tickets (varies depending on month of travel | ~ $6,000 |
Total Costs | ~ $17,000 |
For some people, it may be cheaper to sell their household belongings and to buy new ones in Canada.
Please be aware that the table above only includes the costs associated with the relocation and excludes your ongoing living expenditures once you are in Canada. Your real daily expenditures may be greater, lower, or equal to those in your native country depending on which region of Canada you are migrating to. Of course, this will rely on the relative costs of expenses like rent or mortgage payments, cell phone and internet bills, car payments, gas, groceries, and so on.
