Zip code is a 5 digit code that is found on the top right-hand side of a letter/package. There are 9,223 ZIP codes in the United States and each Zip code has a unique range of numbers.
In this article, I will be unveiling the list of all states in the USA with Zip Code, United States Postal codes, and all USA Postcodes by state.
What Is A Zip Code
A ZIP Code is a postal code used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Introduced in 1963, the basic format consisted of five digits.
In 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code was introduced; it included the five digits of the ZIP Code, followed by a hyphen and four digits that designated a more specific location.
The term ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan; it was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently and quickly (zipping along) when senders use the code in the postal address.
The term ZIP Code was originally registered as a service mark by the USPS; its registration expired in 1997.
Types of Zip Codes
There are four types of ZIP Codes:
- Unique address: Big organisations like Hospitals, universities, Government agencies and businesses that receives a lot of mails uses unique zip codes.
- PO Box only
- Standard (all other ZIP codes).

Uses of Zip Codes
Zip code is very important in top world countries like the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and almost in every country of the world, zip code is very important in sending mail, delivery/ logistics fraud detection and research demographic decentralization.
Below are some major uses of zip/postal codes:
- Mail services: This is the main use of zip codes and postal codes.
- Delivery services: Used for internal routing of a package.
- Statistics: For example, in the United State, there are over 42000 zip codes. Apart from delivery mails, zip codes are also used in gathering statistics.
- Marketing(Zip-codes marketing)
- Legislative districts
- Internet purposes: You will often find zip code under most education or eCommerce website registration page.
- Credit card security: Codes can also be used for credit card authorization.
USA Zip Code Map
ZIP code is a postal code system used in the United States of America by its Postal system known as the UPPS. ZIP basically means Zone Improvement Plan.
The concept of ZIP code was introduced to ensure that all the mails get delivered quickly and efficiently. ZIP code primarily consists of a five-digit number like 55416.
These five numbers are extended after putting a hyphen by 4 numbers, which is also called ZIP +4. For example 55416-4214.
The first digit of the ZIP code corresponds to the specific group of US states it belongs to.
The second and the third digit correspond to a specific region of the group state it belongs to.
Fourth and the fifth digit correspond to the delivery address group pertaining to that specific region.
